This Collection of Bhajans is dedicated to the loving memory of

my late father

SHRI PRAKASH CHANDER BHANOT

who always upheld the importance of religion, moral integrity and righteousness
in our worldly existence

and

my late mother

SHRIMATI SARASWATI DEVI

who always believed in the importance of singing Bhajans and reciting Mantras
as an expression of Devotion to the Supreme Lord.

INTRODUCTION

Bhajans are devotional songs recited in praise of, and expressing love for and gratitude to, the Lord.

Contemplating, uttering or writing the names of the Lord serves to purify one's thought, speech and action. Chanting the names of the Lord is one of the means of God-realisation through Bhaktiyoga.

Bhajans can be sung either quietly in one's heart or loudly for all to hear. But congregational singing or Sankeertan is the best and most effective way of reciting Bhajans. Sankeertan aims at the well-being of the whole Universe.

Devotional singing is not just a mechanical performance. Bhaava (feeling), Raaga (melody), and Thaala (rhythm) play pivotal roles in the proper singing of Bhajans. The devotee must be immersed in the singing, harmonising the voice, tune, feeling, and rhythm to the appropriate beat of the song. The sacred words of the song should be an outpouring of love and devotion towards God.

Bhanot's Collection of Bhajans is a constantly expanding collection of popular bhajans and prayers. I hope that you will find this collection interesting and useful.

If you have any comments, suggestions, corrections, or other popular bhajans that you would like included on this site, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail at drbhanot@bhanot.net .

UNIVERSAL PRAYER
(an original `translation' of OM JAI JAGDISH HARE by Dr D K Bhanot)

Oh Lord of the whole Universe, Mighty Lord of the whole Universe
All Thy devotees' agonies, All Thy devotees' sorrows
Instantly Thou banisheth, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

He who's immersed in devotion, He reaps the fruits of Thy love, Lord, he reaps the fruits of Thy love
Floating in a cloud of comforts, Floating in a cloud of comforts
Free from all the worldly problems, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Thou art Mother and Father, At Thy feet I seek eternal truth, Lord, at Thy feet I seek eternal truth
There's none other than Thee, Lord, There's none other than Thee, Lord
Guardian of all our hopes, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Thou art Godly perfection, Omnipotent Master of all, Lord, omnipotent Master of all
My destiny's in Thy Hand, My destiny's in Thy Hand
Supreme Soul of all Creation, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Thou art an ocean of mercy, Gracious protector of all, Lord, gracious protector of all
I'm Thy humble devotee, I'm Thy humble devotee
Grant me Thy divine grace, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Thou art beyond all perception, Formless and yet multiform, Lord, formless and yet multiform
Grant me a glimpse of Thyself, Grant me a glimpse of Thyself
Guide me along the path to Thee, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Friend of the helpless and feeble, Beneficent saviour of all, Lord, beneficent saviour of all
Offer me Thy hand of compassion, Offer me Thy hand of compassion
I seek refuge at Thy feet, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Surmounting the earthly desires, Free from the sins of this life, Lord, free from the sins of this life
Undivided faith and devotion, Undivided faith and devotion
In eternal service unto Thee, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

Oh Lord of the whole Universe, Mighty Lord of the whole Universe
All Thy devotees' agonies, All Thy devotees' sorrows
Instantly Thou banisheth, Oh Lord of the whole Universe

BE THOU A DEVOTEE OF THE LORD
(a composition by Dr D K Bhanot)

Be simple. Be humble.
Discard arrogance and resentment.
Surrender thy ego at the feet of the Lord.
Eliminate any sense of separation from the One.
Be thou a devotee of the Lord.

Be loving. Be caring.
Be kind. Be forgiving.
Shed the cloak of jealousy and animosity.
See God in everybody and everything.
Be thou a devotee of the Lord.

Be thankful. Be grateful.
Be sincere. Be honest.
Marvel at the wonder of this universe.
Appreciate the beauty of the Divine Creation.
Be thou a devotee of the Lord.

Be generous. Be big-hearted.
Have faith. Have hope.
Give thou within thy means.
Take thou within thy needs.
Be thou a devotee of the Lord.

Feel the oneness with the Lord.
Meditate on the glory of the Lord.
Yearn to be united with the Lord.
Bow thy head in prayer to the Lord.
Be thou a true devotee of the Lord.
